An interesting #Fediverse experiment I'd once in a while feel like encouraging people to do (given time and motivation at hand): Get yourself testing accounts on a couple of different services beyond the one you're actually using. Take a fixed set of friends to follow from each of them. Wait for a few days. And then browse through all these accounts of yours to see how federation from them to you worked. As in: How many of their posts did arrive on your end at all? Did they arrive reasonably in time? Do they display comments, interaction count, ... in there? There are insights to be won from that, for sure.
That's a whole load of small details to notice how advanced Diaspora* or also to some extent Hubzilla-without-ActivityPub are, were in terms of reliability of the whole mess. Like, here: My Mastodon instance will receive federated AP posts almost completely and reasonably "in time". Friendica is lagging behind but just a bit. My Hubzilla instance that is fast otherwise in case of my test cases is lagging behind hours to days looking at individual accounts, and it seems quite a bunch of posts for these didn't even make it there or at least aren't displayed over there at all. (And don't even get me started about interactions count or comments.)

🏚️An abandoned house somewhere in rural England, largely untouched since its last occupant mysteriously left and never returned.
The house features a vintage English bedroom. There are numerous clocks and pocket watches, as well as a vintage Jones sewing machine. A mixture of 1940s/1950s, is my best guess.
I find these so moving, thinking of the people who slept in this bed, who used the sewing machine and looked at those Tvs. The life that's been there sometime.
Goodness. My late mum would have drooled over that sewing machine, and the style of decor I definitely recall from my granny's house. A lovely little time capsule. 😀
A web page that tells you what your browser gave away the moment you arrived. No login, no form, no permission. Most pages do this. None of them tell you.
@june @iamada Seconded - I get the Tor and/or VPN mixes, but I get the impression there are "simpler" options? NoScript doesn't work here, since these scripts are local.
@june @iamada @Natasha_Jay How so as it seems to be working with my browser. I first load the page and then enabled JS. It revealed a lot. I turned of the temp allow, flushed all the cookies, et al. Then re-opened the page and nothing revealed.
@iamada @june Hm, I think browsers should feed bogus data, just so sites wouldn't even detect it being held back. But it's not a trivial task, knowing the consequences of falling behind this treadmill: one data point slips out - and suddenly all users of the same browser pay the price.
@FourT4 They got my timezone wrong,... I'm not ever enable Javascript for these dum-dums ever again to scold and lecture me on what happens when I enable Javascript to "FAFO" and have them lecutre me.
Thank goodness for stronger security - it got two of the 22 points correct for me. One of them was my language the other was the name of my µblog server where I clicked from. A lot of this stuff has been baked into the web since the early days, not all of it needs scripts and cookies etc.
Even though it wasn't 100 percent accurate in my case, it's still a frightening representation of the connections. And what is revealed about you online without your knowledge. 😶🌫️
AI slop website. The homepage (sinceyouarrived.world/) says this website was made by riseuplabs.app/ "AI products that turn the market into action". Seriously, these websites are slop, stop boosting it.
@konstruct Also, the whole thing is rather silly. Am I supposed to be horrified that the web server I chose to access knows the IP address I used for the request? Or that it knows what time it is? There are some disturbingly accurate ways of fingerprinting users, but most of the ones on that site are pretty innocent if not necessary for doing anything at all.

@konstruct just because the author works at an AI firm does not mean that the site itself is vibecoded. It seems like some actual UX design was put into it? And the "sources" section states that the author wrote every piece of text himself without LLM assistance. He likely used Claude or similar to get the *scripting* up and running since most webdevs seem to do that nowadays, but this website does not seem to be totally based on vibes. Not everything the darkness touches is slop.
@kebokyo 1. nothing says "written by a human" on the main page, sinceyouarrived.world/ 2. even if some pages (I saw, sinceyouarrived.world/sky) say the text is human, it's just bad writing and product placement for the AI company credited at every footnote. 3. I can say "trust me, it's AI" just like they say "trust me, it's human". 4. the twitter (!) profile for Matt reads "[...] Technologist, Investor" and those are two words I do NOT trust or like 5. even if the text is human, this is still shitty as hell. AI-generating anything is shitting on artists and human rights. Endorsing AI is the same.
IMO a lot of this is very sensationalized (the whole website is - oooh, "taken", like in that one movie, ooohhh). It doesn't offer any solutions either, just... be scared, be angry? I suppose?

It got my location very wrong indeed, which is interesting. However, it's a brilliant idea. The thing that I found most surprising was that apparently browsers can harvest your current battery percentage and use it to track you across sites. That's extremely sneaky!
@macronencer While I'm sure it's used to help fingerprint, screen resolution data is benign and is intended to help display web sites on the huge number of screen sizes and resolutions out there.

Sweet. Some of what I'm doing is working. It got almost everything wrong except a few necessary facts I share with a lot of people.
Basically just using a VPN and LibreWolf. It thinks I'm in Seattle and my TZ is in Iceland.
The website did note that my browser sent false info for screen size but mention the substitute in still a data point. It is, that's why I don't change the screen size from the default startup...usually (and librewolf puts it back).
@sharkfie This one seems to indicate that the false fingerprint LibreWolf gives is pretty unique. I like that it reports the values so I can see myself.
One that seems kinda unique (1:600) is the list of system fonts being really small.

This caused the ad-blocker test to fail. I have an ad-blocker and other sites can see that because some of them, like geeksforgeeks, bitch and demand I turn it off.

Yeahh, sites like this have been around since we were sharing them on AIM and MySpace twenty years ago so the shit it got right doesn't surprise me much. The shit it got *wrong* is fascinating though 😀

You left 24.9 seconds away You just switched to another tab — or another app — and came back 24.9 seconds later. The Visibility API named the exact moment you left and the exact moment you returned. Every website you open can read this signal. Most advertising platforms use it to calculate whether you are actually seeing their ads, or just leaving them open in a background tab. Your attention is a commodity. We just watched it leave the room.
This was neat, but i was amused that the very first thing it did was complain to me that i didn't have Javascript enabled. Of course i didn't have it enabled! THAT'S HOW THE TRACKING IS DONE!!!!!!
The EFF Cover Your Tracks website does a better job because it will actually tell you what it can find out even with Javascript disabled, which isn't much!
I would LOVE one that somehow keys into the major info stealing networks and reports back what every retail site gets from you via Facebook cookies or any other ones.
FWIW the site failed to get my GPU nor the resolution correctly (misreported both).
@crazyeddie @sharkfie Unique does not necessarily imply that you are identified. If it's a *different* unique fingerprint each time you visit and other users also have such varying unique fingerprints, a website cannot tell you apart from any other user in that group. It'd only learn that you are part of that group.
*gasp!* It knows my local ISP's AS is local to my city?! Or that the Date Javascript functions use the local device time? Or that it renders itself on a specific screen size and scale to know how to place elements where? The horror!

(In some situations, switching back and forth between tools, you all of a sudden notice: There's only "better" or "worse" but never really "good" or "bad". It's all relative. It's all about comparing. And it's all, in a way, too, about a culture that makes comparing, choosing, switching an almost cult-like lifestyle, that focuses quite a bit on re-evaluating decisions and ultimately ending up running in loops and spending hours and hours to this, hours that can't be spent to other more satisfying and maybe more purposeful activities and ... in an odd and somewhat gloomy way I wonder whether, keeping "products", tools, ... constantly at a level where they are just "better" or "worse" than others while never being good enough to stick with a decision for really long, is one strategy of a certain social system to keep people busy and from digging into other, more pressing aspects all too much.)

Every other week I read about some federated social network instance running into trouble due to some system outage, either following human error or technical failures on actual hardware or infrastructure issues on some provider. And again and again this feels sad, given we're in 2026, we have decentralized approaches such as dat or ipfs around, and still, just all too often, availability of full services, user data and the like depends on virtual machines with some sort of "local" storage operated by small groups or even individuals. Where did we fail to get architectures more robust and reliable than that? 😔

Analoge Fenster so weit geöffnet lassen, dass der Nachmittag vereinzelte Tropfen auf Stirn und Unterarme werfen kann. Geschichten von Niedeschlag und Staub.)
Random notes on federated crap: I'm more using @Kristian for certain more purposes now, and @Kristian that merely should go for short-form video snippets. For the latter, I haven't really found any other meaningful platform, peertube seems way too complex and heavy for this), for the former, I just ... want to somehow be a less quiet person in that particular community. Not sure whether this works out. And again and again overwhelmed by many of the obscure sidetracks of the Fediverse, it usually gets worse everytime I touch a different service (peertube...) or follow down individual trails left by new users.
Out with the wind. A few moments, or rather fragments of these, to let mind loose of what kept the morning busy. Refitting repurposing inner compute resources. Wir schweigen eine Weile. „Warum überhaupt immer diese Reihenfolgen?“, frage ich. „Warum muss immer einer den Anfang machen, warum nicht einfach alle zusammen?“ Sie zögert, sie bleibt sogar kurz stehen, ich sehe förmlich wie sie nachdenkt. „Ja,“ sagt sie, „du hast Recht, ist eigentlich viel schöner, dann gibt es sogar einen Regenbogen, wenn Regen und Sonne gleichzeitig da sind.“ Sie macht eine Pause.
