Having Another Look at #Friendica


Just for fun, and perhaps to expand my horizons a little. Despite all the good things I have had to say about #diaspora - it's wonderfully simple UI, it's easy learning curve (which makes a huge difference for people who are new to federated / distributed social networking) and all those good things - I'm seeing that Friendica is a lot less confusing and befuddling than it used to be years ago when I first tried it out.

Believe it or not, so far I find #groups easier on diaspora than on Friendica even though diaspora doesn't offer "groups" in the same sense. I simply use #Aspects to make my own groups; and posting to the group is as simple as merely posting to that Aspect.

On Friendica searching for groups is more difficult. There's no "directory of groups" like you might expect to find on a platform that offers group memberships. And very few groups that I was able to find were very specific, like a single family or local organization. Nothing like "Livinghistory" or "reenactors" or "ReformedChristians" or "XfceUsers" or even distro-specific groups for Linux users.

So far it's still been kind of fun, and it does reach a lot more people in the wider #fediverse as they call it, including Diaspora. In spite of it's steeper learning curve, it's easier than I remember from my earlier experimentation with Friendica.

(Lunch break chores, too: Cleaning up a bunch of Fediverse groups subscribed to, in some cases years ago and never revisited. A long list of empty shells and disconnected servers and instance names that don't resolve anymore. Lots of difficult gut feelings about all of that, talking enthusiasm and experimentation and waste of resources and lack of sustainability and all that, while at the same time once again reconsidering use of Friendica not just as primary but as the only tool for digital communication. Not because it's perfect. But because, all things considered, it seems the least bad option to choose. And still yearning for this sentiment to change.)

When I experimented with Friendica years ago now, it was a bewildering thing with a bunch of features I never even thought to use. And when I did finally try some of those features it got even more confusing. Simplicity brought me back to diaspora ...

But now diaspora (still never reaching "1.0" status) is getting buggy. On multiple servers ("pods") I can't change settings, profile pics, etc. Still, I'm grateful for a FOSS alternative to Fakebook and all that. Yesterday I revisited friendica (rowdyrobin@friendica.world) and it seems better than before. Still, I wish there were easy-to-find tutorials to help newbies naviagate all it's features.

Yeah, I know what you mean. In all ways. And I'm still a bit sad that Diaspora* never managed to make it past a well-crafted 1.0 version, mobile apps and all the stuff Mastodon and a lot of the ActivityPub apps started out with early on. For that, Friendica is the best alternative at the moment. Even though it is glitchy and at times underdocumented. friendica-hilfe.gitbook.io/fri… seems the best introductory guide by now I guess, albeit German-only as far as I can tell.

@griotspeak There’s no reason for any independent service with any degree of integrity to have anything to do with Twitter/X. Just none whatsoever. Manton is choosing to do this because he *wants* to. He’s justifying it in the lamest way (“some people still use X”). My guess is that one or two of his customers have pressured him to do this, or maybe he’s even doing it for Vincent (who uses X exclusively himself). In any case, here we are: at a time when it’s never been more important to stand up for what is right, Manton is taking a seat and lighting up a cigar.
