Im Halbschlaf spürt man weder Leichtigkeit noch richtige Schwere, dafür die sanft vibrierende Stadt unter Fließen Boden Fundament. Jetztwelt hinter einem dünnen Schleier, Wahrnehmungshorizont äußerst beschränkt, noch kein Kaffee noch keine Richtung und mehr Fragmente, als das Bild benötigt. Die Herausforderungen erster Ordnung, weit vor der Dämmerung. Habt es mild heute.)

Captured with a small mirrorless camera and 21mm lens, on a compact travel tripod.
This was a case where I hadn't really planned to make formal architectural photos and so had only a small camera with me, with no shifting lens. I made do by shooting wide with the camera level and cropping, which works but costs resolution and constrains how you can organize the frame. It worked well enough here, but I always feel like I'm leaving something on the table when I don't have the right gear with me.
This composition plays with the contrast between the ambitiously-sized sign and the humble, rustic old store. The photo is about shapes and scale.
This is also a bit of a nod to Grant Wood's famous 1930 painting, American Gothic. (See artic.edu/artworks/6565/americ…). Wood's painting was inspired by a grandiose, ornate attic window in an otherwise humble rural farmhouse that Wood happened upon during a road trip. The absurdly oversized, incongruously Googie-style arrow sign here reminded me of that.
Quite a lot later and soul mind body slightly out of touch with each other once more. Aftermath of conversations, elephants, dark corners and the art to avoid all of these. Still practising. Incenses, a few candles, the scent of fir and winter. The strange void between every two thoughts, two heartbeats, two breaths - and how to fill it with whatever meaning might feel comfortable for now. Have a calm night everyone wherever you are.

a few years ago i mentioned that i wrote a book about the exciting, awkward and embarrassing experiences of growing up with computers and video games in the 80s and 90s.
i wanted to remember what it felt like being the only dorky computer kid at school. or what it was like to hear my first modem handshake sound. or starting the first flamewar on the school's national FirstClass BBS in the macintosh lab over the lunch-hour
it was originally something i wrote only for my family and friends who were there at the time.
and then i met all of you folks when i started my first masto instance 4 years ago. i had no idea there were so many hardcore retrocomputing and gaming nerds out there; unix and mac and ms-dos folks alike.
so i mentioned it casually. i was surprised by the interest in the book.
so i spent the better part of the past 3 years rewriting the book for *you* fellow mastodon dorkus malorkuses. the book is a celebration of all of the best (and worst) parts of a kid growing up in the digital age.
we're all busy old tired stressed folks now. so every memory and cringetacular story is short enough to read on a 5 minute bus/metro/toilet ride. they're weaved together into an arc that starts at my family's first Tandy TRS-80 and ends at my school's Mac LC II and building my first Pentium 133.
it's finally published, and i'm super proud of what it became thanks to everyone here nerding out for years.
@Chigaze i was thinking about seeing if Audrey’s was interested in putting a few copies up on their shelves. stores like chapters won’t carry it because it’s self-published
either way amazon does the physical printing in Acheson.
my wife just published a book as well. She used Draft2Digital and it's available for bookstores to order it. Barnes & Noble picked it up right away, adding it to their online catalog.
It won't appear on the shelf at bookstores, but at least this gives people options to buy it in print besides Amazon.
That’s what I figured. I’m not sure what Audrey’s policies are for carrying self-published (and I assume print on demand) books. I can order it from Amazon then. I generally avoid them but I can make an exception. 😀

the design was heavily cribbed from the Microsoft Entertainment Pack, because i think of the book like a bunch of mini-stories (games) that cohere into a single story
@ghosttie i talk about that a bit in the introduction and conclusion. it wasn't quite a method, but it worked a bit like this:
- i thought of some game or computer i loved (or hated) - i thought back to a specific time that i played it as a kid - that usually made me think of the place i usually played it at that time - which would lead me to an incident that happened at that place
out of that i'd get 1-2 pages of a specific memory fragment. after i had a few of those fragments, they began to slowly link together into a few weeks or months of my life.
i did that process over and over, and it eventually covered grades 1-12. but the key to it all was starting with the object.
@sarahhmakes thanks! I e-mailed Audrey's asking if they're interested in carrying it in-store. it could be a long time before that happens - their local author system looks like it can take a year to get anything on the shelves. :\
fwiw, as much as i despise amazon, their printing and distribution is local. for #yeg orders the books are all printed in Acheson. (and for those who order from Toronto, they're printed in TO)
It was Apple ][ (AD&D gold box), C64 (all the games my friend's uncle could fit on a stack of double-sided 5 1/4" floppies), and NES (lightgun, power pad, and R.O.B.) for me.
Once I got a modem in college, it was MUD via VAX. The difference between relying on TinTin autoplay combat while I watched the screen scroll by at 2400 vs. actually playing once I got up to 14.4k was like the jump from VHS to 1080p.
I was never allowed to call into BBSes due to long distance phone charges.
@jrdepriest woo awesome! that R.O.B. was every kid's dream back in the 80s. i *finally* got one at christmas this year, and i was aggrieved to find out it has like... two games 😆
i was on a VAX/VMS system in university too. any idea which MUD you played?
@hustvedt oooo i'm insanely envious. there were so few macs in my community: my jr high school's brand new LC II lab, and the farm-neighbour a km away who parents had a Plus in their basement office
i wrote about both of them in several chapters. got me into a lot of trouble 😆
i would have LOVED to see MacWorld (and honestly, NeXTWorld) back in its heyday

As a kid raised in Europe in the 80s who lived (and keeps living) all the 8 bit revolution first hand, I think it's going to be fun to relive it from the perspective of Canada/USA. Some things will be the same, some will be different (eg: modems were a luxury here due to how phone was billed, no free local calls).

Questions, answers, data retrieval and hallucinations. Reviewing the control flow, trying to weed out faulty chunks and running the same process anew. Same parameters different outcomes and the surprises of known randomness. A deep sigh, staring into clouds, 3pm and on still.
Schon wieder mehr als halb durch den Tag und es braucht immer wieder mehr Zeit als gedacht, um die Abläufe drinnen wie draußen auf denselben Takt zu bringen. Unschlüssige Sonne in unnachgiebigen Wolken, windlose Kälte, immer noch kein Schnee. Paketdienst an der Haustür gegenüber, erfolgloses kurzes Klingeln und dann zurück in den Transporter, auch dort ticken die Uhren stets zu schnell. Asphaltkontakt, Supermarkt des geringsten Misstrauens, immer noch Maschinenstreik, aber irgendjemand hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, die entsprechenden Hinweisschilder neu zu gestalten und robust zu laminieren und aus Form und Umsetzung tropft jede Menge Resignation. Voller Warenkorb, leere Kasse, Frühjahrtausendsschlager und dann wieder zankende Krähen. Der Takt wartet.
Vielleicht muss man den #NeuHier-Leuten auch mal sagen, dass die meisten Accounts, die hier kritisieren, oder bestimmte Regeln einfordern, oder komische Software empfehlen, wirklich nur helfen wollen. Manchmal (oft) treffen sie nicht den richtigen Ton, aber sie meinen es gut.
Denkt daran, dann wird das schon mit uns allen hier. ❤️
Ich will nur sagen, wenn bei einer Person was als Oberlehrerton ankommt, hat die andere Person aus ihrer Sicht evtl. gar nicht in dem Ton gesprochen. Und vorher fragen usw. erfordert teilweise erweiterte Kommunikations-Skills, meiner Erfahrung nach. Aber ich will Dir Deine Erfahrung nicht absprechen. Schön jedenfalls, dass Du trotzdem geblieben bist. 😊
Vielleicht müssen diese Accounts ihre gutgemeinten Ratschläge auch einfach mal für sich behalten, sonst haben sie die DID Leute genauso schnell wieder vergrault wie damals die ganzen Twitter Leute, als Elon den Laden übernommen hat :/

Another day started and went by, another night with the air outside turning colder and colder. Skies of vast clear blackness, shining winter stars and a surreal promise of snow. The pub seems opened for the first time that year, dirty blue lights casting light silhouettes on sidewalks and parking cars, music caught and suppressed by closed windows and maybe other means of filtering reality. It's about training and adoption, it seems. And about getting rest at the right time which is hard to figure out, every day anew. Sleep safe everyone wherever you are.

Fresh snow at Snoqualmie Pass. This was taken just after a storm, when the forest goes quiet and every sound feels absorbed. The snow softens the edges, slows your pace, and makes familiar places feel new again.
Vormittag zwischen Themen und Mittag zwischen Themen, dann wird Pause nur einer von vielen zeitgleich laufenden Aspekten und vielleicht ist das keine gute Idee. Kommen und Gehen an der Flurtür, Bürohund gähnt, eine ungesehene Stimme beschimpft den Kopierer, aber früh im Jahr im Monat ist das Vokabular noch entspannt. Ferner: Vertragsparameter, Randbereiche, Grauzonen und die Momente, in denen unter punktuellen seltsamen Beobachtungen grundsätzlichere Fragen lauern. Auf der Baustelle schabt derweil ein Bagger über die Kippermulde und der begleitende Ton zieht kurz durch Mark und Bein. Gedanken und Wahrnehmungen wie Vogelschwärme, auf unförmigen Kursen - und die Höhe über dem Frost des Bodens bleibt nur ganz fern erahnbar. Viel zu schnell.
Also, communication and exchange of opinions and just all too often it feels people stuck in that paradigm of /believing/ in science rather than adhering to scientific methods and mindset and this feels difficult on too many levels.
☕ Virtual meeting room culture, mostly awake now. Christmas trees in the back of screens, slightly dry, and a certain grumpiness in people to tackle today.
Resting on train seats. Unsure what makes the morning decide whether to actually sit down or just remain standing near the door for these few stations. The outside world but a blurred perception of fuzzy colours and lit windows of lower floor offices, shop fronts, hotel lounges and cars waiting on crossroads, visible enough to go noticed yet passed by too fast to be really seen. 7am and on and not there yet, pondering input and rough mental models and still waking up.
(Sinnieren, über Eule, Amsel, Nachtigall und andere Vögel. Zu früh und ohne großes Interesse an Würmern, einigermaßen zerzaust und mit jeder Menge Traumstaub, Schlafsand noch im Gefieder. Irgendwo gibt es schon Kaffee, aber nicht hier; in der Haltestelle wartet der Busfahrer auf seine Linie und das Verglimmen der ersten Zigarette und die Fenster der anderen Fassade erwachen heute schneller. Noch immer zwischen Bad und Küche, schon wieder auf dem Weg, mechanisch und mit geschlossenen inneren Augen. Habt es mild heute.)

Way beyond dusk again. Somehow beyond tired, again or still, even though not in a bad way. Another brief glimpse at the ongoing night and the spots of light of backyards and streets. A deep breath in icy wind, and a short focus on ones own center before letting thoughts drift off for a while. All the stories, all the dreams. Sleep tight everyone wherever you are.
Am Rande des eigenen Dunstkreise in einem anderen Netzwerk hetzen verhinderte Influencer gegen eine empfundene Trinkgeldpflicht bei bargeldlosen Zahlungen, und für mehr als nur einen Augenblick bleibt Unsicherheit in den eigenen Gefühlen dazu - zwischen Irritation, resigniertem Schulterzucken und dem Bedürfnis, harte Worte dazu zu finden.
Vor allem die Frage: wo landet das bargeldlose Trinkgeld?! Immer wenn ich danach gefragt habe, hat mich die Service-Person schräg angelächelt, so dass mein Trinkgeld noch niemals bargeldlos war!

Die Diskussion dort war aber eher entlang der Linie: Mit den Kartenzahlungs-Apps werden wir plötzlich dazu gezwungen, eine Trinkgeld-Entscheidung zu treffen, weil das Terminal und 5/10/20% abfragt, und deswegen geben wir gar keines mehr. Die Möglichkeit, diese Abfrage zu überspringen und eben einfach eine Münze oder einen Schein auf den Tisch zu legen, war hier wohl zu einfach.🙈

Ignorieren und bares Trinkgeld und das Thema wäre durch - aber stattdessen sich "gegängelt" oder sogar "genötigt" zu fühlen und deswegen ausnahmslos passend zu zahlen, ist irgendwie ... weird und unsozial.😔
