I read a review someone said it was “offputting” that we do pay-what-you-can for elementary OS. Bro take it up with my landlord. it’s “offputting” how he keeps asking for rent. It’s “offputting” how I gotta pay Digital Ocean so you can type in 0 and download for free anyways. I dunno what to tell you. Welcome to capitalism. “Offputting” lol

@Alex It seems even worse actually: Providing more ethical software and services as a privilege of those who can afford to work for public benefit because of a day job that pays the bills? Not judging here but at least to me this seems one of /the/ core issues of FLOSS in the 2020s.

I don't mind a PWYC or PWYW model. That is very much in the spirit of open source. No idea why anyone would complain about that.

What I don't like is a bait-and-switch where you have an open-source project blowing their horn about how open-source they are and then when I actually get around to installing, demanding I pay commercial subscription rates (which I can't afford) for any of the features that make the software useful.

This is a big marketing problem really. People don't know the real people behind the keyboards and what it takes.

The Asahi team lead, before he said 'Sayonara Suckers!', said that initially people were very enthusiastic and generous with money, but as they progressed the money dried up.

I think elementary had the right idea. It gave courage to other projects to be bold enough to hide a 'Donate so I don't starve!' button three menus deep.

I wish more Open Source project would use a pay-what-you-want model, with the option to put zero. Because way more people would be like "yea, i could give a few coins". Most people likely just install and don't think about it. So make them think about it! @kde should also include a pay-what-you-want option for software in Discover, think of the potential influx of money to developers. Just leave the default to zero to not make people upset about it.

Well, on the contrary, I really like what you do. I have donated a couple dozen euros, but whenever I see Linux distros that demand payment, I just get sad. With eOS I can at least just type a 0 and get it for free, so I can try it out. I think that's perfectly fair. And yeah, you shouldn't be pressured into doing everything for free when you have bills to pay. I don't understand these people. Do they not have to pay rent?
