@cherizilla Yes, I like that drive. Almost no traffic and wide open spaces. Oddly, I seem to pass that way when it is raining which makes the drive even more fun. I love being on an empty road drinking coffee while it is raining.

We were there in '95 I think it was, visiting the Inn, the black mailbox, the border of Area 51, and hiking to the top of Tikaboo Peak for a little observation... Definitely a fun trip if you're into that sort of thing. 😀

Wizened moss woman Once upon a time there was a wizened old woman who decided to say F this and live amongst mossy boulders and thick forest trees forever. Inspired to write this silliness by reading the English fairy tale ‘mossycoat’ about a girl whose mother wove her a cloak of moss so she could travel to wherever she wanted.
There is an old folktale, maybe in one of the Lang books about a girl with a special cloak. Actually there is another where it's spun from bog cotton. Maybe both have Princes. I have full text search on about 8000 PD texts. I just need to think of key words.
Also Freya isn't the only person with a feather cloak.
to my shame, I was in my 30s when I 1st learned that in Europe, and possibly other places, "corn" refers to grains like wheat and not to American Indian Corn "zea mays"

So my systems recently updated to rsync 3.4.3, and as soon as that happened my backup system - which does incremental backups using multiple --compare-dest= arguments - started to fail on anything but a full backup.Revert to 3.4.1 and it works.
So I go look at the source in GitHub to see what might have changed, because there doesn't seem to be anything relevant in the changelog.
Lunch break, temporary deviations but by choice. Limited resources as a challenge that becomes more immanent the closer you look at it. Managing test cases and expected misbehaviours of complex systems and muttering about absent information while that mug of tea is cooling down way too fast. I had goats. Saanen dairy goats and Angora goats for fiber. I did love having them, and it was great for my kids when they were young. I gave them up when we moved to get my son into a better school system. They took up a huge amount of my time and energy in the prime of my life, non trivial.
One thing about goats though: as ruminants they are prolific converters of biomass into methane, and thus they fuel climate change.
Goats are chaos agents. Every single one of them. Computers are logical. If you do the same thing, you get the same results. Goats are biological. You can be consistent AF and they will still do as they damn well please. Which usually includes finding fifteen new ways to piss you off each & every day.

!Friendica Support On my single-user instance, I do have a constant deferred worker queue of in between 300 and 600, which on closer look always and repeatedly are about communications to be sent to some defunct instance. What's the best way to get (a) rid of these altogether and (b) set up the instance so that these don't keep piling up that much?
@Michael 🇺🇦 I was kind of hoping so but some of the instances out there (like holm.community - whatever that was - or friendica.world) are showing up again and again every day and have been so for quite a while now. Not sure in which state both of them are.
Edit, on closer look, holm.community in example doesn't seem "down", it just doesn't seem to respond to requests at all, or it has blocked my instance. Would blocking the server help? How can I prevent communication attempts to there knowing they will be futile?

Freitagmorgen also. Nacht, Zerrbilder, milde Luft, gelegentliches Rascheln in den Blättern der Zimmerpflanzen, gelegentliches Tanzen von Staubpartikeln über dem Bett, dem Gesicht, dem Traum, erstes kaltes Wasser, erstes heißes Wasser, Satzbehälter, aber im übertragenen Sinne, weil der Krümelkaffee rückstandslos verschwindet und jeder andere Satz um diese Zeit eine reine Angelegenheit von Zufall und Glück ist. Ferner erinnert man sich gerade um diese Stunde besonders gut an die Dinge, die der Vortag eigentlich noch einfordern wollte und die im Rauschen untergingen - noch fehlt die Konzentration, aber im unsortierten Modus fehlt es nie an Unruhe im Angesicht solcher Erkenntnisse. As I've been hinted to reconsider here, maybe that's a good starting point to think of - follower power: Please do share bubbles that you consider work well out here on the #Fediverse, maybe (for obvious reasons) with the specific exception of those focused on protocols, web technology and development. Respectfully, and as a newish user from a special interest group, I disagree. There's a large and vibrant #blind community on Mastodon that couldn't exist on any other platform.
(Switching back to here for now. I love social.lol and the community over there but ... can't help feeling very much how annoying it is to keep communication across Bluesky, Tumblr, Diaspora* and ActivityPub on any platform other than Friendica. Not sure whether I'll regret that but then again, and in general, maybe ... it's all about accepting imperfection of all of these solution and not bothering all too much as ... esssentially no one does.)
In many ways this ... is also basically caused by being increasingly disappointed with how things are going in the #Fediverse but maybe that's just a bubble thing. I've been out here ever since early identi.ca days, with my first post on federated social networks dating back to 2011 and still being around somewhere in the Wayback Machine. As of 2018, I think, this was the first time ever to feel like this kind of networks could finally be up to counter the commercial walled gardens, to provide an actual, human, human-centered alternative to surveillance capitalism and people farming. Turns out: It surely does better than Facebook, X, ... in some way. But it still is far from where it would need to be for that. And worse, it doesn't seem to improve much. Sure, individual platforms have matured. Mastodon has. Friendica has. But at the very end, at the bottom of things, in 2026 (eight years later) it's still the same un-addressed, unresolved issues to run into as in 2018 (which I have been whining about often enough not to do it again). Still, from some angles, it's amazing to see how some of these things did "just work" before on Diaspora* (and still do). It's amazing to see some of these issues fixed in ATProto (regardless of ones opinion on Bluesky) because people cared to think a bit ahead of the status quo in advance. It's, too, saddening to see how many once-vivid accounts and contacts out here have either turned quiet or deleted their accounts or visibly announced retreat into some walled garden (again) or to individual blogging and all of that. It's not a bad thing. It's an individual decision that should of course be respected. But it's sad. It feels very much like mission not accomplished. It feels like specifically ActivityPub has turned out to be what it apparently started wanting to be - a protocol that focuses on open networking but actually, in this, focuses on hackers and tinkerers and developers rather than users and communities, a protocol that by design is biased towards people building "something new" on top of it (and making compatibility - or lack thereof - something anyone else is to blame for) over people using technology in a reliable manner. Not sure whether the Fediverse is growing or shrinking and at some point I don't really bother that much at the moment. Just hoping that, for the time being, #Friendica will somehow continue working as good as it can to keep different channels under one hood (and not having to decide to keep or cut contacts based on an individual network technology choice again - or being overwhelmed by trying to handle a plethora of different inboxes in a load of almost fully equal yet separated systems) - and hoping for people out here to be forgiving if there are things, conversations, communications I just miss out on. Maybe part of the deal is accepting that big-picture things over "here" aren't built with reliability in mind.

Having joined properly in 2023, I see those issues. Whenever I go to check on who I'm still following, there's definitely some dead accounts that make me quite sad.
@Radgryd Yeah, this. It's also ... not so much the fact that people give up and move on, that apparently happened in every other network too. It's specifically, in my environment, that I notice people moving on after being here for weeks to months, trying to feel home here, becoming more quiet and eventually just quietly cutting ties then, for a lot of reasons that probably could have been avoided and are valid. 😔
