With 43K+ servers, and over 12 million users, on 66 (possibly more) different platforms that would be difficult to figure out. Small single user instances could be running on something as small as a Raspberry Pi, while larger instances are likely running on a cluster of servers in a data center... Gathering the stats and figuring it all out would be a massive undertaking.
FWIW - my numbers above were gathered from fedidb.com/ -- a good place to look around to get some idea of the scale of the Fediverse as a whole.
@unattributed 𓂃✍︎ Ok... I kind of expected that. Wonder, though, whether in terms of sustainability, energy consumption should be something to consider. Especially also talking about resource consumption for communication - I've then and now been playing a bit with AP messages and the JSON structures sent around and this seems heavyweight and also something worth keeping in mind (and maybe optimizing) on a network level.
I think, if anything, the measure of the energy consumption is something that the administrators of each instance should be handling. It's really up to them to measure this kind of information, and make a determination about the overall energy efficiency of the communication across the network.
However, that being said, if there were a group of instances that wanted to measure and publish this kind of information, it would be interesting to roll it up into a report. Call it a benchmark for the Fediverse for others to measure against.
As to the weight of Activity Pub, and its JSON structures, I can't speak to that. I haven't messed around with it enough to judge that.
(Not sure whether this should be pinned here or makes sense at all, but well. I'm okay with any piece of software that might be ready and available to do self-hosting. But much more than that I appreciate and am looking for offerings that are hosted, developed, supported in a long-term sustainable manner and for which there are alternatives that allow me to vote with my feet safely, completely, easily in case one offering turns sour or inacceptable for whichever reason. And looking at things from that angle, very few systems out there seem a good choice today.)

The gorgeousness of the code, the dearth of that same code, and the evasiveness of the questioner were all clues.
That, and that the code compiled and ran without error, did nothing useful, and there was far too little code for the intended task.

LLMs can double the effort for answering questions, too. Once to answer the question, and then again to explain why the slop is outdated, misdirected, confused, or just plain wrong.
There certainly are cases where this stuff is useful (vulnerability scanning of curl and OpenSSL with Aisle included), but I’m not at all certain LLMs as currently applied aren’t a net negative.
And we’re deep in the “throw AI at the wall and see what sticks” part of the hype cycle, unfortunately.
Update: DuckDuckGo at least has fixed this issue, likely thanks to some folks making a good kind of ruckus! Still, I hope this has informed people how much of a pain Bing can be with this kind of thing in general.

This is not entirely true. DDG pulls from other sources as well as Bing, so neocities does appear at the top of their search results in a Wikipedia info box, with a clear link to the website. Individual neocities websites are appearing in DDG search results. But like they say, the main URL is excluded from the actual search results.
@syhr I literally laughed out loud a bit when I did the same thing searching “neocities” on DDG; I’m baffled that neocities.org is directly banned from search results, but not the link as it appears in a Wikipedia blurb box

I did have the same issue with my site on Bing. I was randomly delisted and had to create a support ticket (twice, because Copilot didn't create it the first time I asked it to). A few weeks after the ticket was created successfully, I received a mail that said that they'd fixed something internally and that I should be visible through the index again. (And yes, it did work!)
But this still shows how bad Bing actually is. o.o
inb4 someone roasts me because I used an LLM: That's literally their support agent when you try to contact support through the Bing Webmaster Tools. You can't skip it. Calm down.
On @Qwant, if you search neocities.org selecting "France" region you get results (it gets data from its own EUSP index for France and Germany). Changing the region to Italy, the results from neocities are basically zero, since Qwant uses Bing in all other regions.

@Microplastics101 FYI Qwant (my usual web search engine) seems affected, too. A search for Neocities gives a lot of results about Neocities but none from Neocities.org.

Bing is prone to de-index domains without apparent reason. I have this problem on-and-off for four years, and it knocks my site off many search engines.
Mojeek still works. Only use DDG for normy stuff anyway. Or startpage when that doesn't work. Every tool has it's use and I should really set up a searxng instance.

But if I were on Neocities still, I don’t know if I would care about my site appearing in search results or not. I feel like any of the traffic I get will probably be either from people on the host’s site looking at different sites or from my site being linked on someone else’s site. But I can understand that for some it is probably more important. Definitely important for the main Neocities site for sure.

DDG and others can provide their own index and back fill with Bing results which would allow them to search and index neocities content without bing's support. More importantly they *should* do that so that people would experience "better" search results on DDG and switch.

@Owlor Sometimes, Anime Herald, the site I work for, has been outright blocked by Bing for MONTHS for no reason. I've heard of this happening to others too.
It's pretty frustrating, Bing does a horrific job of answering or offering any help when this happens too. Or even explaining why you've been delisted.

We are very happy to announce the availability of the new stable release of Friendica “Blutwurz” 2026.01. In addition to several improvements and new features, this release contains fixes for security problems that Hrizi Bilel has notified us about. Thanks for your report! Some highlight of Friendica 2026.01 are
we overhauled the embedding of media from various sources and improved several aspects,
users can now sort widgets and channels,
the performance of system and user defined channels has improved,
admins can now export and import contact block lists and block access for non-logged in visitors to media included in posting.

What is Friendica
Friendica is a decentralised communications platform, you can use to host your own social media server that integrates with independent social networking platforms (like the Fediverse or Diaspora*) but also some commercial ones like Tumblr and BlueSky.
Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently.
Using Git
Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository, regardless of the branch (stable or develop) you are using. Remember to update the dependencies with composer as well. So, assuming that you are on the stable branch, the commands to update your installation to the 2026.01 release would be cd friendica git pull bin/composer.phar run install:prod cd addon git pull If you want to use a different branch than the stable one, you need to fetch and checkout the branch before your perform the git pull.
Pulling in the dependencies with composer will show some deprecation warning, we will be working on that in the upcoming release.
As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.
The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2026.01 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.
Post Update Tasks
The database update should be applied automatically, but sometimes it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script bin/console dbstructure update from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.
Please note, that some of the changes to the database structure will take some time to be applied, depending on the size of your Friendica database this update might run for days.
If you are using the daemon for your background worker, note that we have moved the functionality into the console. Adopt your setup to use the new bin/console daemon command.

If you want to contribute to the project, you don’t need to have coding experience. There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.
Contribution to Friendica is also not limited to coding. Any contribution to the documentation, the translation or advertisement materials is welcome or reporting a problem. You don’t need to deal with Git(Hub) or Transifex if you don’t like to. Just get in touch with us and we will get the materials to the appropriate places.

Yes @Peter Lord the channel cache needs to be activated in the local.config.php set the channel_cache and potentially also the system_channel_cache in the system block to true. The one is for the system channels, the other for the user defined ones. The impact on the performance differs from node to node and might also be not beneficial. Hence it is not activated by default.

It took about 12 hours for my workerqueue size to return to normal .. have others seen this ?
I also noticed a large number of bluesky post appearing on my timeline ... I suppose the result of one of the fixes (I unticked "complete the threads" to reduce the posts).
But, u3a.social seems to be back to normal now ... seems pretty responsive to me. Very happy 😀
